Slow-Mad vs. Nomad: How I'm Embracing a New Pace of Life Abroad
When I first started my digital nomad journey, life moved at a breakneck speed. I'd hop from one country to another every few weeks, barely catching my breath before heading to the next destination. Back then, being a nomad felt like freedom, spontaneity, and excitement rolled into one.
Fast forward a few years, and life looks a bit different. As I juggle autoimmune challenges and an evolving sense of what I truly value, I've discovered a term that fits my current lifestyle much better: slow mad.
If you're curious about what it means or considering a slower pace for your nomadic journey, let's explore it together.
What is a Slowmad?
A slow mad (short for slow nomad) embraces slower, more intentional travel. Instead of bouncing between destinations every few weeks, I plan to spend several months in one location. For me, this means spending a few months in Mexico, a few in Thailand, and occasional visits back to the US for healthcare.
This approach isn't just about taking it easy; it's about prioritizing health and relationships and truly immersing myself in the places I visit. It's about savoring the journey instead of rushing through it.
Why I Chose to Slow Down
When I was younger, I thought I had to squeeze every drop of life into the shortest amount of time. I pushed myself to the max—physically, emotionally, and even financially. It worked for a while, but then my body decided to remind me who's boss.
Living with an autoimmune condition has changed how I approach everything. Simple tasks—like organizing my paperwork or even having a one-hour conversation—can exhaust me. It's frustrating, but it has taught me to reevaluate what's truly important.
That's why I've shifted gears. My new focus is on quality over quantity: spending meaningful time in places I love, exploring at a pace that feels good, and prioritizing my well-being above all else.
The Benefits of Being a Slowmad
- Deeper Connections—Spending more time in one place allows me to build relationships with locals, learn the language (or try, in the case of my Spanish!), and really soak in the culture. Instead of feeling like a tourist, I get to live like a resident—even if it's temporary.
- Health Comes First—Managing chronic conditions means I need time to rest and recover. Slowing down allows me to listen to my body and plan my days accordingly without the pressure of constant travel.
- Financial Flexibility—Longer stays often mean lower costs. Monthly rentals are cheaper than nightly rates, and I save money by not constantly booking flights or packing up my life every few weeks.
- Genuine Exploration—Staying in one place for months means I can explore the hidden gems most tourists miss. I can take the time to find the best local coffee shop, make friends with the street vendors, and learn the shortcuts through the city.
Finding Your Own Pace
Not everyone's journey looks the same, and that's the beauty of the nomadic lifestyle. Maybe you thrive on constant change, or you're like me and need to slow things down. The key is figuring out what works for you.
Ask yourself:
- What does your ideal day look like?
- How much time do you want to spend traveling versus staying put?
- What are your non-negotiables for health, work, or personal fulfillment?
These questions can help you design a lifestyle that aligns with your goals and values, whether you're a fast-moving nomad or a laid-back, slow-mad.
Embracing the Slow Life
Being a slow-mad is about more than travel—it's about living intentionally. It's about focusing on what truly matters, whether my health, relationships, or simply enjoying the little things.
As I look ahead to this year's plans, I feel a sense of peace knowing I'll have time to breathe. I'll spend three months in Mexico City, savoring every street taco and admiring the architecture. Then, I'll head to Thailand, where I can immerse myself in the calming rhythms of Chiang Mai. In between, I'll return to the US for healthcare, rest, and reconnect with loved ones.
Are You Ready to Slow Down?
If you've been thinking about embracing a slower pace, I encourage you to try it. You don't have to do it perfectly, and you don't have to follow anyone else's rules. Whether you're a nomad, a slow mad, or something in between, this lifestyle is about creating a life that feels right for you.
